Changing printer settings for terminal sessions

$

Hello,

we have a few apps in our organization that users use via terminal servers. from these apps users can print jobs to their local redirected printers. users are allowed to change their printer preferences on their printers.

some of the apps need specific printer settings in order to successfully complete print job. However printer settings and preferences are mapped from the client computer, on which we have no real control over.

Is there a way to dictate the printer settings for redirected printers? the goal is that locally the client can have whatever settings he wishes, but when connected to the terminal server they will have only the preferences we chose for them.

I was searching endlessly on how to configure printer settings on redirected printers but only found guides on configuring printer redirection with no real reference to the printer settings themselves.

help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi all!

I installed a new print server at my company. I installed only the print service. Everything is working fine, I print all copies from windows, but not print copies from SAP GUI. This function was working good with the old Windows Server 2003. Anyone have an idea, what caused the problem?

Thanks a lot!

Cannot see outgoing faxes Windows 10

A client is no longer able to see outgoing faxes after upgrading to Windows 10 (their own or anyone else's.) This is creating issue as they are unable to tell when a fax is having trouble going through.

This was working correctly with Windows 7 and Windows 8, and Domain Users have full permissions. This is the only user who upgraded to Windows 10 and the only user experiencing issue.

Is there any known solution?

Weird characters appearing in the printer's host name field essentially making printer unavailable...

I am the print administrator for a healthcare company. We run Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1. We have 5 different model Xerox printers in our environment. One of them being the Xerox Phaser 3635MFP. Randomly, these printers go offline or into an error state andno one can print to them. We can't remote into them using their host names. We can only remote into them using their IP address.

This happens so randomly, that when it does happen now, I know what to look for. But I've not yet been able to figure out what is causing it. It appears these strange characters, most notably what appears to be a weird looking plus sign or cross finds it's way into the host name field on the printer which makes it error or go offline.

Does anyone know what could possibly be causing this?

multiple printers and sales people having issues printing to them

I manage a site that has over 100 sales people who come and go like the wind. We have 5 printers, 3 Xerox copiers and 2 Ricoh printers. The Xerox units for the most part are used for printing black and white information and the Ricoh units are used for color printing. All printers have the accounting feature turned on so that any printing by the sales persons can be tracked and billed back to them.

Sales persons use their own equipment so there is a mixture of Windows and MAC laptops. We also have about 10 machines on the LAN that are desktops that they can use to print.

When a sales person starts with the company, we get their laptops and load the drivers on them and give them a bit of a training session to know how to print to each printer.

Our problem is that the sales persons are constantly having issues knowing how to print to the printers and they easily get frustrated, then send the documents to the admin staff to print for them. I realize that we should be looking at just one or two printers of the same brand and sticking with them. I know that would make things much easier but is there an alternative solution to this? I’ve talked to another organization that has exactly the same problem and they do the same, give up and let the admin staff print their documents.

Hi everyone,
I had a little trouble finding this on ony forums, so i decided to write it myself.
I have setup on my Windows server 2008 machine fax server manager. It is working well (recieving faxes and forwarding it through email)
It has been setup with a d-link external fax modem.
Everytime i try to connect my client computer (windows vista business 32 bit)  to the fax server through windows keep getting " you do not have security permissions to complete this operation. Contact your administrator for more information."
I am having a little trouble getting around it as i am the system administrator and have all the rights to do this. I have also added extra to my account fax rights as i thorght, that could of been the problem. I have also added my account in the fax server manager, but that did not work as well.
Everything is set up on a domain and the server that is running fax service manager is on it aswell, not sure what could be the problem.
Thank you in advanced for your help

Print Server - Re-Mapping Everyone's Printer Ports

$

Hi,

I have successfully migrated all the printers to a new server(VM).

The only other issue i have is, keeping everyone's default printers and the printers they currently have in their "Devices & Printers". The names of the printers are staying the same.

I want to have these ports moved over to the new server and users never knew i migrated these printers.(Scenario: Migration is done, user's printers that have already been added before in  "Devices & Printers" stay the same and is able to print from the printer they already had in "Devices & Printers".)

I noticed that there is an option to export printer ports in Print Management GUI. Does this apply to also keeping the same printers in the users "Devices & Printers" or is this something else?

Also, Is there a way to transfer users printer in "Devices & Printers" that are NOT set to defaults? Basically transition existing printers in "Devices & Printers" to the same ones added but essentially in the "background", they are different. The ports are pointing to the server, but i now need to point users printers back to the new printer.

How can i make this happen? It is not ideal for us to have users re-add all the printers in "Devices & Printers".

To add further to this...

We are now taking into consideration using GPO's for this instead is scripting this, as it seems to be more practical.

Do you know if and when we apply GPO's to re-map the printers ports to the users workstation, what stage is this GPO applied? Is this applied when the user restarts the computer? Is this a computer policy or a user policy to achieve this? Also, is this applied before login or after login if it is a user GPO. If its computer, does this apply to users ONLY connected to the subnet once in the office, or will this work for users that are not in the office as well? Can this GPO be applied on VPN?

I appreciate you help.

Thank you,
Jonathan

Problems with Windows 10 clients finding print server by name

$

I can map printers on our company network fine with windows 7 clients, but some Windows 10 clients struggle to resolve the print server by name when trying to map printers. When using the IP address of the printer server it works fine. (i.e.'192.168.0.5\printername'  works fine, yet 'PrintServerName\printername' does not work)

The clients can all ping the print server using its name, so its not a name resolution issue with DNS.

Has anyone else seen any issues with windows 10 clients mapping printers via the print servers name?

thanks,

Dan.

Retain print queue settings

$

Hello,

We have Pull print technology implemented in our environment, and all end users get 'Color' and 'Mono' print queues from local print servers via logon script. Each time when users log off and logon back, script removes the mapped 'Color' and 'Mono' print queues on user machine and  verify and maps it from the local print server.

Problem is that, users loose their print queue settings (for example, double side, staple etc) each time the script remaps the queue. Is there a way to retain users's print queue settings when remapping happens? Also, I want script to remap the queues to ensure that users are always getting print queues from local print server.

Thanks

Trouble with Canon printer driver in W10

$

I just purchased a new Canon LBP151dw laser printer for my home network. The printer is properly connected to the network, and when the driver is loading, it sees the printer and supposedly configures properly. The icon shows up in the devices and printers screen, but when I right click on it I get a warning dialogue box that says the driver is not loaded, and would I like to load it. Whether I select yes or no, the printer properties box opens, but I cannot print a test page. I can't print anything else either.

When I look at the Event Viewer under Print Service Admin, I see a number of messages:

Print Server - Windows 2012 R2 - 4,000 to 8,000 printers

Has anybody successfully deployed a Windows 2012 R2 print server that had 4,000 to 8,000 print queues? If so, did you have any hurdles to overcome and how did you resolve them?

I would appreciate any insight for this large scale deployment.  Thank you.

Delete Printer Connections using PrintUI gives error Unable to delete the per machine printer connection. Operation could not be completed (error 0x0000071a)

$

I'm attempting to use the PrintUI DLL (printui.exe) to add and delete per-machine printer connections shared by a domain member print server to/from domain client computers. But I randomly (25% of the time) get the error "Unable to delete the per machine printer connection. Operation could not be completed (error 0x0000071a)."  Code 0x0000071a may mean "The remote procedure call was cancelled" (RPC_S_CALL_CANCELLED). However it means nothing to me and I do not understand why the RPC would fail on some attempts, but work on subsequent attempts.

  • Print server is Windows 2008 R2 SP1 with the latest recommended hotfixes.
  • Clients are Windows XP SP3 or Windows 7 SP2 with the latest recommended hotfixes.

Seemingly very inexplicably and randomly our support stafff get these errors when they run the script to add or remove printers. It does not matter which printer server or printer share (I have multiple print servers and printers).

I am adding and deleting the connections in a command script using these commands:

   Add:  RUNDLL32 PRINTUI.DLL PrintUIEntry /ga /c\\%1 /n%2 /Gw >> %3

   Delete:  RUNDLL32 PRINTUI.DLL PrintUIEntry /gd /c\\%1 /n%2 /Gw >> %3

I have tried adding print spooler restarts before or after the PRINTUI commands, but this does not seem to help. In fact, if I add the spooler restart it seems like I increase the failure rate on Windows 7 clients and decrease the failure rate on Windows XP clients.

I have even tried to circumvent the problem by deliberately attempting to add or delete an invalidly named printer share ("\\DoesNotExist\IgnoreError") but this throws a pop-up error message which must be clicked "OK" to bypass. That error message is "Unable to add the per machine printer connection. The local print spooler service is not running. Please restart the spooler or restart the machine." Which is an incorrect error and has nothing to do with an incorrectly named print server share in the add or delete commands of PRINTUI.

Can't Remove Printer Drivers in Windows 7 32-bit

On one of our Windows 7 machines at work I am unable to remove any of the printer drivers that are currently installed on it. I have tried to remove them as the domain admin, and local admin with no luck.  The error I get when I try to delete the driver in the print server properties is as follows.

"Unable to remove driver blah blah, Type 3 - User Mode driver. The specified printer driver is currently in use."

There are currently no jobs waiting to be printed on any of the installed printers.

Any idea's?
