Windows Server 2008 r2 redirect printer

$

when i connect remotely to w2k8 server, i have to change the settings in the printer to "print directly to spooler" but this option is grayed out and i cannot change it, i try to take ownership in the security tab but each time i log off and log on the ownership disappear and i have to put it again.

where you can change the owner of the redirected printer, and change it to administrator (instead of SYSTEM)?
is there any option in gpedit.msc to save my changed configuration on ownership level?
how can i let a user change the settings of his redirect default printer?

thank you for your support

Internet Printing - The printer name is invalid

Hi,

I am struggling to get internet printing working on Windows Server 2008 R2.  I have had this working fine on 2003 in the past with no issues.  The objective is to give some contractors working in our office but on a public internet link access to print on our office printers via the internet.

I can view the printer properties via the website @https://publicsite.company.com/printers but when I click Connect I am prompted whether I want to add a printer connection tohttps://publicsite.company.com/printers/printername/.printer?

Clicking yes to this gives the error:

Printer Installation Failed. The printer name is invalid.

On the LAN I can add the printer via UNC path,\\servername\printer and I can add it via the internal website athttp://publicsite.companyname.com/printers, though when I connect via the website it gives the path as\\publicsite.companyname.com\printername. I can’t connect internally to the printer as http://publicsite.companyname.com/printers/printername or viahttp://servername.companyname.com/printers/printername.

·         On the machine accessing via the internet I have tested with the site as local intranet and with the site added as a trusted site with medium / low security and the password is saved

·         The webserver has Internet Printing added under the Print Management role and Internet Printing Client feature installed.

·         The web server has had the hotfix recommended here installed:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982643/en-us

·         The registry key from this article has been added to allow printing via cnamehttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/979602

·         Internet Printing Client is installed on all Windows 7 clients I am testing from.

This was a breeze to get going under Windows Server 2003, have to wonder why it has changed so much.

Where can I go from here towards getting this going?

Cheers,

James

User Page Quota Server 2012 R2

I have searched the forums and it would appear that Server 2008 R2 does not support this, however, I would like to ask his question again for server 2012 R2.

Just like you would assign disk quotas is there an option to set a print quota to a specific user so they are only able to print X amount of pages a day/week/month?

Windows cannot connect to the printer, specified port is unknown

Luckily it's near christmas so the school is pretty much empty

Printer GUID logged in Operational log

Client:

Windows 7 SP1 x64

Server:

Windows 2008 R2 SP1
Latest UPD drivers from HP, Xerox, Ricoh, etc.

Problem:

In the Microsoft-Windows-PrintService/Operational log, the printer's GUID instead of name is getting logged for events during GPP actions.  By actions, I mean when the printer is recreated (since the GPP setting is REPLACE).  Happens for all vendors.

Sample event (there are plenty more for other EventIDs too with ID 300, 304, 306, 302, 301)

Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-PrintService/Operational

Why isn't windows logging the real printer name? The GUID isn't useful at all.

TerminalServer / EasyPrint RDC W7 not printing to XP Home

I installed the network printer ~6 weeks back, and recently it stopped printing between the systems, but I can print from the local XP PC to the MP C305...

Office PC = XP Home SP3

Virtual PC via RDC = W7

Network Printer =Africio MP C305 (PLC6 Universal) (redirected 8 on W7)

What I have tried:

1) Copying %systemroot%\system32\Tswpfwrp.exe from the W7 to XP (TSWPFWRP was crashing on print) - didn't solve the issue.

2) Removed a suspected offending printer that would stayed greyed out no matter what, (stoping/starting/checking spooler w/MS FIXit tool) and wouldn't allow for me to deleting it from HKLM\System\current control set\control\print\printers & HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Settings. ***Now when I stop and start the spooler, all the physical printers DO NOT  come online BUT the software printers do.*** ALL printers show up normally when I initially log in.

3) Connected my XP Pro desktop to the W7 desktop and printed to my Canon MX320, NO PROBLEM.. Proving that the permissions are working.

4) Adding the printer as a 2nd copy to the W7 environment
5)checking the print spooler w/the MS FixIT spooler app on both machines.
6) Removing and adding the printer to the local machine (which prints fine to this network printer BTW)
7) Removed the physical printers in the W7 environment registry (HKCU and HKLM)
8) Turning off the "local resources" in RDC , logging in, loggin off, turning them back on and logging in.
9) Watched Sys32\Spool\Printers - populate data (2files come up, then a 3rd one while the printer shows 1 page pending/printing) and then after a few seconds, the files in Sys32\Spool\Printers disappear (as they should)  and the printer then says "no documents in print que"..

Does anyone have anther option I can try ?

IIS7 The printer name is invalid.

Have tried countless remedies listed here and in other forums with no avail. Most of those threads are years old.

Using IIS7 on Windows Server 2008R2, client is Win8. Both 64bit Correct printer drivers loaded on both.

Can reach the print server site: https://XX.XX.XX.XX:XX/Printers/printername/.printer

But when I try and connect using the link under Printer Actions I get the following error

Printer Installation Failed

The printer name is invalid.

I've tried opening ports 443, 631, and even tried some custom ports. Client has firewall off.

Has this ever been fixed and I'm missing it somehow?

Printing notification bubble showing wrong number of total printed pages

Dear Sir/Madam,

Server - Microsoft Windows Server R2 2008 Enterprise (Clustered)

Networked Printers - HP LaserJet Printer, Ricoh Multifunction machine

Clients' PC - Windows 7 desktop

I have installed print queues on the above Server.  However, users encountered problem when printing MS Office documents - Printing notification bubble showed "This document was sent to the printer" is showing wrong number of total printed pages.  But there is no problem on the printout.

I found that there is no pages number error when printing PDF files.

Would you please help to check the above issue and how to solve it?  Thanks for your help

Svr 2008 each RDP usr gets differnet printer

Hi all! My question may or may not be possible, but work-arounds would be great! What I'm trying to do is have user remote into our server (win 2008 foundation r2) and use our Point Of Sale (POS) system on the server and with that, they'll have to print out receipts with the thermal printer next to the machine they are remote-ing in from (the printer is hardwired to a switch on the same network as the server and all the other computers). I've got all the thermal printers installed on the server itself and everything works, as it should. The problem is: once we change the printer for one user, it changes it for all the users. Note that all the machines are in entirely separate locations within a building so printing from one printer isn't gonna work too well. Any one got any suggestions? Did I explain this right? I know it's confusing as living hell but it fits the needs and we're a company just starting out selling POS systems for restaurants and are stilling working through the kinks in things. Any kind of constructive help in this matter would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks ahead of time!

Error 0x00000709 with DNSonWire Enabled

Hi guys,

I've got an interesting problem that I'm having a little bit of trouble with.

I have a print server set up on Win 2k8 R2 and up until this week it has been running great. We had to replace one of our printers so I made the change in Print Management and updated the associated GPO that is pushing our printer connections and that's where things started going downhill.

The GPO will no longer push printer connections and browsing to the print server and selecting the printer to connect to on a client machine results in the error 0x00000709. However, If I connect to \\192.168.1.1 instead of \\Server01 then I can add the printer.

So the GPO issue is related to the DNS issue, but I'm not sure how to go about fixing the DNS issue. I've followed the steps outlined in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2546625 but have not had any success with it. It's also a little different because I'm not using a CNAME for my print server, just an A record.

If you guys have any ideas about next steps, I would appreciate it!

Thanks,
-Ty

I wonder if there is some way of debugging why the driver fails. The drivers are shared from a Windows 2003 R2 server, and our clients are Windows 7 Enterprise x86.

The full URL of the driver is http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=431039&prodNameId=431042&swEnvOID=2093&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=pl-28280-4

Shared Printer limited to 100 queues on Windows Server 2008 R2 TSE or Windows Server 2012

$

We 've got round 150 printers registrered on a Windows Server 2012 Printer Server.

Our application, running on Windows Server 2008 Server TSE needs to print dynamically on all theses 150 printers.

It seem that on Windows Server 2008 TSE, that we can't use more than 100 printers on any remote printer server

see : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2532459/en-us , This issue occurs because the maximum number of ports that can be generated is a hardcoded value of 100.

Is there any solution ?

Can we except that this limitation to 100 disappear ?

On windows 2003 Server, PrinterPorts in the registry allowed to go over 100

Example :

Print99 winspool,Ne99:,15,45

Print100 winspool,Ne100:,15,45

Print101 winspool,Ne101:,15,45

Print102 winspool,Ne102:,15,45

on Windows Server 2008 and 2012 we have

Print99 winspool,Ne99:,15,45

Print100 winspool,Ne01:,15,45

Print101 winspool,Ne01:,15,45

Print102 winspool,Ne01:,15,45

Pro's and Con's of adding printers to the domain

$

I only manage my OU only, 138 users, 214 Computers & Servers, 120  other assets, and 31 networked printers.  31 network printers, I figured it would be easier to manage them in the doamin, you can assign membership to a particular printer, the user could go out and find the printer themselves, or at least that is my thinking on the matter.

Do you add your printers to your domain?  If so what are the advantages?  If not, why, what are the disadvantageous to adding printers to the domain?

Cannot connect to printer 0x000006bf

Environment:

Print Server:
Windows 2008 R2 SP1
HP UPD 5.7.0.16448 PCL6
Xerox GPD 5.303.16.0 PS

Client:
Windows 7 SP1 x64

Problem:

Occasionally when a user attempts to connect to a printer, they receive "windows cannot connect to the printer.  operation failed with error 0x000006bf".  If the user tries to add the printer again, it will work.

Details:

Looks like that error code translates into an RPC call failed.

C:\>winerror 0x000006bf
  1727 RPC_S_CALL_FAILED_DNE <--> 0xc002001c RPC_NT_CALL_FAILED_DNE

Doesn't appear much is out there on the web with people having this issue. Due to its transient nature, maybe under reported?  The client's print spooler isn't crashing (nothing in the event logs or WER).  Nothing interesting in Microsoft-Windows-PrintService/Admin.

This error isnt in c:\windows\inf\setupapi*.log.. BUT it does show something interesting, which is probably unrelated.  In the past 3 days, there are 9 setupapi.app.<date>.logs, all 16 MB each.  Far too many than normal.  Looking in them, one can see the hpcu155u.inf driver install is looping over and over with three distinct chunks of text.

Windows is doing this every few minutes (which I believe is correlated with a print event from an application).   Thoughts?  There a hotfix for this known problem?

Failed to upgrade printer settings for printer. Error: 1801

$

Server:
Windows 2008 R2 SP1
HP UPD 5.7.0.16448 PCL6

Client:
Windows 7 SP1 x64

Problem:

Every time GPP replaces a printer, Windows is logging the following two error messages:

  1. Failed to upgrade printer settings for printer \\PCNAME\PRRINTERNAME,10,LocalOnly driver C:\Windows\system32\spool\DRIVERS\x64\3\hpmdp155.dll. Error: 0. The device settings for the printer are set to those configured by the manufacturer.
  2. Failed to upgrade printer settings for printer PRINTERNAME,10 driver HP Universal Printing PCL 6 (v5.7.0).Error: 1801. The device settings for the printer are set to those configured by the manufacturer.

Details:

From the error tool, it appears that error 1801 means ERROR_INVALID_PRINTER_NAME. However, the printer IS being installed and functional.

Found http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773827%28v=ws.10%29.aspx and followed the guide to set printer defaults on the print server.  It did not fix the problem.

Found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2618460 (Event ID's commonly associated with point and print restrictions). Yes, Point and Print restrictions are enabled so users can install printers/drivers from the department print server w/o admin permissions. None of the other errors mentioned are logged. Users do not have problems installing printers.

If GPP setting is changed for the printer from REPLACE to UPDATE, then the error messages above do not occur.  GPP bug?

How do I disable automatic addition of network printers?

$
0
0

I have some Windows 2008 R2 terminal servers in my environment that I have manually added local printers to for the users. However when I boot up the servers they are also adding some or all of the shared network printers in our domain. This is duplicating the printers and since I don't have the drivers installed the users can't print to the network printers anyway. (I am using a universal print driver for them)

I want to disable this; I do not want any network printers automatically added. I do not want the users to see them. I do not want the users to have duplicate printers. I only want the users to see the local printers that I added.

I've spent many hours searching and researching but have yet to find a solution. Can anyone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Curtis
